How solar panels work
Solar electricity systems can either be attached to the roof or be ground mounted and capture the sun's energy using photovoltaic (PV) cells. The cells, commonly known as solar panels, convert daylight into electricity which can be used to run household appliances and lighting.
Each panel is made from one or two layers of semiconducting material, usually silicon. When light shines on the solar panels it creates an electric field across the layers. The more daylight, the more electricity is produced and the system will still generate electricity on cloudy days.
The strength of a PV solar panel is measured in kilowatt peak (kWp). That's the amount of energy the panel generates in full sunlight.
Once you have had your PV solar panels installed you will be required to fill in a Feed in Tariff (FiT) form for your appropriate utility supplier and send this along with your MCS certificate, EPC and proof of ownership (which we will email to you on completion) and send off to your utility company.
You can also couple your PV Solar Panels with a Solarimmersion which will divert any surplus power generated by your solar panels to your immersion heater to heat your water.
